I suspect your perception of Tony Abbott's popularity is grossly overestimated. If Labor had not been so on the nose at the time, Tony Abbott would never have been P.M. at all. And as the polls at the time he was deposed show clearly, the collective sigh of relief on his removal was considerable. Nobody should be fooled by the media he crops up on as they're very friendly to him and there is absolutely no scrutiny regardless of how absurd or hypocritical his position on any given issue may be.
Each to their own but you can only sell something if someone is willing to buy it and it will IMO be impossible for Tony Abbott to be seen as credible given the political legacy he has.

Abbott done very well under the circumstances
He was backstabbed , undermined by Turnbull.
His cabinet continued to leak against him.
He had a left wing hostile media against him 24/7 led by their ABC
He was getting polled weekly by left wing dodgy polls
