A charity is just a not-for-profit company. An NFP is a company which doesn't return a dividend to shareholders as part of its charter (many ASX companies don't return a dividend to shareholders... LOL). An NFP doesn't have to distribute any money to "the cause" it is supposed to represent, it can spend all its donations on office, cars, lunches, salaries, etc.
CEOs of NFPs are there to make money and get experience on company boards.
