Not a cross promote (and most people in the V space are familiar with AVL ) but on this theme it is worth reading over the AVL threads as they have a lot of knowledgable people who have been following the Vanadium energy storage story for a long time and there has been a tonne of good info and research posted there...

VRB's definitely have big advantages over solutions that lithium is currently heading up simply because it is more well known and tested... But hopefully it is a 'when the dam breaks' type technology...
Pumped Hydro is currently the prefered large scale energy storage, but the more VRB is used worldwide,,,, I really feel it will have its day..
I haven't heard any good arguements against it yet. Apart from experts with interests in Lithium.
