NZ voted to amend the Marriage Act in 2013
to allow same sex marriage and it was passed by
a huge majority 77 to 44.
At the time the current PM Bill English voted against
it but has since said if he could vote again he would vote for it.
He said “I don't think that gay marriage is a threat to anyone else's marriage."
In December 2016, in his first press conference following taking office, Prime Minister Bill English announced he would vote in favour of same-sex marriage if another vote were to be held. He said "I'd probably vote differently now on the gay marriage issue. I don't think that gay marriage is a threat to anyone else's marriage." English voted against the Civil Union Act 2004 and the Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Act 2013, and in favour of the Marriage (Gender Clarification) Amendment Bill 2005.[21][22]
