I partly agree with Clark. One needs to make sure that the company has some cash and a reasonable 'story'. Knowing management is key. Very good managers can overcome financial difficulties. Unless you're a broker you won't get to meet and assess management, but the next best thing is to read past announcements. Get a feel for the company by the way they write, (including spelling, grammar and general tone) and also have a look at their website. Is it a $5000 website designed to last until the director has made off to the Bahamas, or is it a professional site? If you can read between the lines, there is a lot you can tell about a company.
