You obviously don't have access to depth of market info. It's much easier not to get caught out the way you describe if you can see ahead of time where the orders are actually placed.
The liquidity changes during the evening..towards the end of the evening it can very thin... early evening the market's typically still quite liquid, often 1 pt spreads.
I trade the sfe market directly, BTW.
