This china/Taiwan thing has been going on since around the end of WW2 when the Kuomintang Nationalist Party fled to Taiwan after they were defected by the Communists led by Mao,help by the fact that the Japanese surrendered to the yanks and left China.
The Kuomintang fled to Taiwan along with everything of value that wasn't bolted down.The Communists were not very happy about this and would have invaded Taiwan long ago only Yanks step in and stopped it at one point many years ago when tensions exploded.
Mainland China has always said that there want Taiwan back under there control (thing another Hong Kong) and refuse to accept Taiwans claim to independence.
As for this happening before the Beijing games,this would be highly unlikely imo.Think loss of face.
