CNM are perfectly positioned to win this given they are a Western Australian based company.

The Water Corporation will call for renewable energy tenders for the proposed Binningup (Between Mandurah and Bunbury) desalination plant tomorrow, which can include yet-to-be commercially proven sources of power.

The corporation will start advertising for the supply of 200 gigawatt hours per year – 40gwh of which will be provided by technology not yet commercially proven on such a large scale, including wave power and geothermal energy.

Water Corporation chief executive Jim Gill said the fact it was not commercially proven would not push out the timeline on the project because they were advertising so early in the process.

If this process does not produce a viable option, the corporation will procure the full 200gwh from commercially-proven technology.

The corporation expects to have the tender process finalised by May 2008 with the second desalination plant expected to be up and running by 2011.

Mr Gill said water from the new plant was likely to cost $1.90 per kilolitre but he would not say how much it would cost householders.

Water from the existing desalination plant costs about $1.20 per kilolitre.
