Royal13 keys to making money in market is to never try and pick bottoms ie buying stock as it falls. Never average down ie buying more shares as price falls to reduce average cose per share. Cut losses short, if you buy a stock because think it is going to rise and it proceeds to fall best option is to get out and find a better prospect.
Buying stocks such as CME is breakout trading looking for break-up with increase in volume. Premise is that big hitters with deep pockets have inside info, or deem the stock as excellent value and are wading in. So essentially following big money. Need to get experience in knowing when you are dealing with a false breakout and also when run is coming to an end. Common pattern after run is 3 day stall, surge in price over a few days then pullback with decreasing volume for 3-4 days then off again. Big money is made by trend following identifying positive trend as identified by shorter term moving average over longer term try say 20 over 40 I use exponential moving averages (EMA or XMA). Ride that trend as far as you can and let your winners run don't take quick early profit as occasional big gains are what make the difference L-T. But worth taking profits ie will typically sell half on double, remove principal and look for another good candidate. I have found most indicators etc are not much help they just cloud the issue, try sticking to moving averages and volume. Hope this helps theres so substitute for experience. And always trade with money you can afford to lose as this helps you stick to plan and reduces stress so you can manage trades in logical manner without knee jerk reactions that invariably chop winners early. One of the best books as a primer is Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets by Stan Weinstein. Avoid buying too much literature as too many books and theories tends to cloud judgement and prevent formulating a simple effective trading plan and sticking to it. Good luck.
