I have asked the company for comment in relation to your question. According to the company the lithium GXY can produce is used in batteries and is competitive with lithium from brines in this regard. Further detail is below:
Spodumene is a source of lithium products used in batteries, in fact prior to supply from brine lakes it was the only source of lithium for lithium carbonate production, as well as glass making and ceramics. A number of lithium carbonate producers are only set up to process the brine products however a large number still use spodumene as a feedstock.
Brine producers are lower cost, however the projects have a long gestation time and operate in environmentally sensitive areas. Galaxy’s project is one of the few that will come on line in the short term. Given the recent surge in lithium prices spodumene is very much a viable source of lithium carbonate.
