I always pose the question, why is it only North America Europe and ANZ who bear the brunt of paying to protect the world's refugees. Japan is one of the richest countries in the world but try getting them to take any. What about the oil rich midle-eastern countries- surely they can afford to take some and some would be more culturally happy there. The government , judging by it's actions, doesn't feel happy with the burden of asylum seekers and the electorate, judging by the last election, in the main seems to agree with them. So why not just come out of the treaties that we have signed and be on the same level as Japan etc. We could still grant ad hoc asylum depending on circumstances but we wouldn't need to clog our courts up with people appealing as a means of staying deportation(apparently most cases are decided in 3 months, it's the appeals that take the time).
