    Exactly. Its a way of comparing different potential investments. You want to buy the business which will provide you with the highest earnings per dollar invested (i.e. the one with the highest earnings yield.

    So a low earnings yield (high market cap, lots of debt, low earnings, or any cobination) means your getting a lower return per dollar invested.
