You are assuming that Telstra or any other company for that matter is going to pay the full gross amount as a dividend. At least with fully franked shares, we know that we will get 30% of the dividend from the ATO, provided of course we are in pension mode in our super fund, and we can add that on to the projected dividend, giving us a fair idea of the total return. This is why fully franked shares are so popular with retirees.
I do not know of any unfranked shares that would give a grossed up return as high as fully franked shares. If there are any, please let me know.
