One of these is the Emerging Resources Company Share Fund, managed by EIM Capital Managers.
EIM investment manager Tony Wiggins says, "We recommend that gold stocks should be part of a broader portfolio of natural resource companies. Gold is becoming less relevant. There are so many other asset classes. You don't have to buy gold any more.
"If something happened to one of the other major metals there would be major implications. If zinc disappeared, cars would start to fall apart. But if gold vanished a lot of jewellery would disappear and there would be some impact on computers, but it would not have a devastating effect on the world."
He advises investors to seek out quality companies with low costs, good reserves and sensible development plans.He especially likes Western Australian explorer Carrick Gold, which boasts a large resource of high-grade gold - with production due to start in 2009 - a favourable cost base and an active exploration program.
