Fight to stop sanctuary uranium mine
Posted October 24, 2007 08:13:00
The South Australian Greens are moving to stop a proposed uranium mine from being established in the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, in central South Australia.
Marathon Resources is undergoing feasibility studies into creating a uranium mine at Mount Gee.
Greens Upper House member Mark Parnell says Mount Gee is right in the centre of the sanctuary.
Mr Parnell says the mine will have huge environmental ramifications and should be stopped.
"Most people would think that an area set aside as a wilderness sanctuary would be protected," he said.
"But in South Australia that is not the case. And what we see at Arkaroola are plans for a massive uranium mine.
"So that's why I've introduced a Bill into State Parliament to say sanctuaries should be protected from mining, the same way National Parks are protected from mining."
