I can't believe this is still a point of discussion.
If the consolidation is voted down it may well be one of the first such proposals in history to suffer that fate. As I have said before, it is largely cosmetic and as this_is_it points out, it will serve to reduce volatility, which will reduce the company's cost of equity capital.
Take these hard facts, MPO's beta is 1.9 (source: Bloomberg). This is higher than all of the CSG companies that I follow, with the exception of ESG, which has a beta of 2.0. The others are SHG 1.5, MEL 1.5, BUL 1.4, QGC 1.1, AOE 1.5. Bringing down the beta will reduce the required rate of return on equity.
Perhaps management are struggling to explain the benefits to you because they are not experts in finance theory.
I sincerley hope everyone with half a brain votes for the proposal, and noellyn I would bet that there are more than enough sensible shareholders to make the vote a mere formality.
