I have been caught in the past on this one. The option settlement price will not always be that at close of today's business. Those securities that are also traded on overseas' borses can have a delayed settlement as a result - sometimes up to 7.30pm. last year I happily signed off at COB on expirary day confident in the knowledge that I was above the line with my RIO short. Only to find out next day that, after the ASX close RIO's price moved significantly in london and raised the OTH settlement price, I was assigned. My advice is that if you think you are safe, but close to the mark, you close out.
