given the large degree of apathy and inertia that Australians possess generally when it comes to politics, and the tendency to pass the responsibility to someone else when things go wrong, compulsory voting is essential. Not to ensure everyone has a chance to have their say, but to try and stop the never-ending b1tching and moaning about conspiracies that would happen after any election irrespective of who won.
One of the differences between our way of doing things and Asians generally, is that here when people with opposing views sit down to negotiate a deal, when the deal is done, if it was split 51% to 49%, 51% would come out claiming victory and 49% come out still opposing it. In the Asian way of reaching consensus, the final deal, after having been endlessly adjusted to get everybody on board, ends up being supported 100% by everybody.
