Garrett's second slip in a week
Matthew Franklin, Chief political correspondent | November 03, 2007
LABOR frontbencher Peter Garrett has embarrassed his party for the second time in a week by telling a radio announcer that Labor will break its election promises if it is elected on November 24.
Sydney 2UE announcer Steve Price said yesterday that he ran into the Labor environment spokesman at Melbourne airport yesterday and asked about Howard government charges that the Opposition was copying its policies as part of a "me-too election".
Price told his listeners yesterday that Mr Garrett had responded: "Once we get in, we'll just change it all."
The gaffe, heard by an unnamed third person described by Price as a nationally known personality, was seized upon by Peter Costello as evidence Labor was lying about its support for Coalition policies on tax cuts.
Last night, television personality Richard Wilkins confirmed he had overheard Mr Garrett's comment but said he had taken it to be light-hearted.
Voters Be Very careful Come This Election, to This most untrustworthy Opposition.
Cheers.
