GM, the people who focus on the children in detention and try to use their plight as a lever have little understanding of human nature or human emotions.
I have lived in 3rd world countries and observed first hand people in all types of situations. Of one thing I am certain, irrespective of the material circumstances of the parents, kids are better off remaining with the parents rather than being separated. It doesn't matter if they live in a shack with a dirt floor, no water, no electricity and no sewerage, there are plenty of families happy with the little they do have as long as they are together.
It is perhaps not so important to those advocating separating the kids, but for others here, and more so in many of the societies that the refugees originate from, the integrity of the family unit is paramount. Obviously not everyone places the same importance on their kids, and as here there will be bad parents, but I believe that most people who take risks to illegally travel to another country and bring their family with them are doing so to give their kids a better life. If there are cases of kids suffering, then those cases have to be addressed on a case by case basis. But please, don't try and make out the exceptions are the rule in order to pursue your own agenda by playing to peoples emotions.
