Kashga, after thinking about the need for the 1MW pilot stage 'before' the HotRock40 stage, I can see the logic, but I am still not fully convinced.

By constructing a 'relatively' cheap 1MW plant, for which they are fully funded, they will not only demonstrate the concept in a more bankable way (possibly strengthening their position in any fund raising) but will be able to calibrate the 40MW stage using the data they receive. Although surface structures are practically off-the-shelf, they will see just how efficient current design models will be (having not selected the final design model for the 40MW stage and beyond) and how much they need to be reconfigured for the Australian climate (and I'm thinking the enormous cooling fan arrays here, amongst other aspects).

The thing is, they have Origin clearly wanting this to go ahead, and supplying a large amount of the $226m or so that HotRock40 will cost. The 1MW stage seems to be an expensive training course.
