One very good reason that I see tht could have been behind the bombing of the Italians is that this act is aimed at demonstrating to other countries that they should not send their troops to Iraq or pull them out if they already have.
A tragic way of making a point but that is war I suppose.
You can not say that the Yanks, Poms and even Australia were not warned.
