GLEN Innes Severn Council has signed off on a $2.5 million tin mine near Emmaville, which promises to create up to 15 full-time jobs.
Taronga Tin Project is Aus Tin Mining’s flagship development and with 57,000 tonnes of tin, it’s one of the largest undeveloped hard-rock tin projects in the world.
Glen Innes Severn mayor Steve Toms said for the 300-strong town of Emmaville, the added economic activity was a major boon.
“Emmaville’s roots are in mining, and has a very long history of mining tin,” Cr Toms said.
“A lot of work has been done on the environmental review process. From that point of view council was quite satisfied.”
The mine, located about 7km north-west of Emmaville in the Grampians Range, has a footprint of approximately 10 hectares.
It will be carried out in two stages, with the first stage involving a trial open cut mine.
A total of 410,000 tonnes of rock will be excavated from the open cut pit, which will be 230m long, 90m wide and 50m deep. The site is expected to established within a 12 week period.
