The article adds to the growing concerns about loss of civil liberties which NEC type systems involve.

Rest assured history does repeat itself. Police have abused the system in the past and will in the future. All it takes is for a South Australian Police officer to use it to stalk his or her ex or to leak the fact that a politician or a judge was seen somewhere embarrassing and regulation by warrant will happen just as it did with telephone tapping and listening devices.

The fact is that BRN is already able to address any such changes. As Mr. DiNardo said in his December update it can even be installed in individual cameras and preselect the images of interest and send only those images on to the end user.

Such a system would mean that a Judge could issue a warrant for a fixed period of time to use cameras to capture/locate/observe a specified individual or individuals in a defined area of a town, city or state in exactly the same way listening device or telephone tap warrants are administered.

The low power requirements of BRN tech even means that portable battery powered cameras can be authorised covert installation in private dwellings or other locations without any fear that innocent third parties privacy will be compromised.

While until that happens BRN tech can do all of the things which NEC type systems can but only better given its capacity to correctly identify from poor quality images.
