FMG have trialled and propose to use surface miners I have read a couple of articles where BHP and RIO are now considering the same type of mining. Still to be proven in a fully operational enviroment. I have cut and paste why FMG
chose Surface Miners over conventional Pilbara equipment?
• Less damage to costly tyres
• Optimises mining rates and haul
efficiency
Flat pit floors Rough pit floors
• Less ground required open to meet
production target
• More efficient equipment schedules
Pits always open for mining Pits closed for blasting
• No primary crushing
• More lump due to less crushing(20%
premium on lump v fines)
• Less armouring required on trucks –
less fuel to move ore
Produces Smaller particle size Larger particle size
• Higher Fe grade and iron making quality
product attracting higher prices
• Less wastage
More dilution from thin
waste seams
Selective mining reduces
dilution caused by thin waste
seams
