I think you are referring to excise duties on cigs - it's about 60% of the cost of a packet, plus they are subject to GST.
I also think that the Libs would be proud to be accountable for the GST - it's a tax on spending and everyone spends. Not everyone earns income - and some that do don't appear to.
Surely you understand that governments have to raise revenue? While I'm thinking out loud - I think the argument against a GST has been won and lost. But don't worry, the chances of it going up are zero imho.
