Incarceration is just a symptom of social distress. Something that all the screaming and shouting in the street will not rectify. Unfortunately a small number of people lived on a continent happy with their 65,000 year old state of the art technology. Then the real world ran into them. If it wasn't the British, it would be some other Country that moved in. It is a perfect example of why you cannot stand still as a community and if you cannot control your borders, someone else will do it for you.
There is no obvious solution to the current problems. Most current solutions are band aids. Many of the proposed solutions , even if they are solutions, are hard to reconcile with a rapidly growing population. 25 million Australians, who have enough worries of their own.
