My understanding is that XRF will work on RC chips and dust. However it is most reliable when the sample is of consistent size. It can be used for Zn and Ag. Mitchum, who posts around and about, told me that his XRF will even work on gold when the machine is set to 'soil'. As a general rule grades in percent can be measured OK, grades in ppm are more problematic.
