Notice the reasons given in the article to research this: cost of lithium batteries, largely due to lithium supply. If economies of scale bring lithium battery costs down later, they'll be favoured because of their unbeatable energy density: lighter, smaller batteries. As far as I know, nobody expects to be able to beat lithium for that. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
