Don't try and read too much into it, It's a trillion dollar fund that wants some exposure to an improving mining services sector. By themselves, a 5% shareholder can't affect anything other than 5% of the vote when they get the chance.
In the past I have tried to read into the motives of an investment company(Pala) that took a stake in WDS in 2007. They ended up with 27% of the company. It looked like they were going for a takeover. I loaded up, but got tired of waiting. After a number of bad results, I sold out losing a modest stack of cash.
Pala sold out in Aug 2014 at .90 to other institutions in a book build and would have taken a bad haircut on their investment. Precisely one year and a shareprice decline of 90%, WDS went into a trading halt never to be heard from again.
Instos come and go, usually not for any other reason than they see a company that they can get a good return on for their investors.
