Well it is changing fast enough to be making electric cars near competitive.
Of the several major lithium battery types in electric cars, not all use nickel chemistry, therefore moving away from nickel would not be that radical, just further development of the existing competition. Long term it could be something radically different perhaps not even lithium ion based.
Very early days for electric transport, but mass technology tends to move to eliminate chunky costs, and nickel (or cobalt) are very chunky costs for battery technology.
Won’t change your mind, and not anti nickel myself, just a bit agnostic as to batteries driving the pon wild. They should certainly be able to drive another couple of dollars a pound into it imho. 8 to 10 probably not unrealistic. I am dubious though about anything like 12 being sustainable. Just opinion.
