Do not believe it stom, Europe trees are OK because they have taken steps to curtail the acid rain. I have seen acres of forest affected by the acid rain about 10 -12 years ago and they were realy dying, it was no joke.
To discount Chernobyl as panic attack is just plain stupid. People of Ukraine living in viscinity of the reactor had suffered greatly from radiation from birth defects to cancers.
While it is imposible to separate the Chernobyl effect from incidence of cancer, leukemia and birth defects in neibouring countries, it did not make the population healtier, did it.
DDT was recognised for the poison it was, it just did not decay to harmless substances, instead it continued to accumulate in nature and it would eventualy kill us all. Its use was banned to prevent that from happening. If you do not believe it get some and sprinle it on your sandwiches and see how long you will last.
We humans survive because we usually can spot the problems before they kill us. Occasionally it happens that the populations ( for example Mayan civilisation in Central Amerika or Easter Islanders )fail to recognise or act on the warning signs and pay the price.
In my opinion if it looks like rain, take an umbrela. If you do not have to use it, so much the better.
