Dean, the problem is basically construction and maintenance. Add to that grid connectivity. If you have an Outback solar array, you have a construction in the desert, and with desert winds and suchlike, the panels will have to be cleaned down constantly, otherwise the solar efficiency will markedly deteriorate.
If you have an accompanying storage facility, both the solar array and storage will require constant servicing - hence you will need fully functioning permanent camps around that facility.
Huge, huge cost involved. Add to this the need to connect the array to the grid, and you have an additional level of costs involved.
