In a US opinion poll,71% of residents living within ten miles of the existing 64 nuclear power plants said it was acceptable to add a new reactor to the existing plant. 86% gave the existing plant a "high" safety rating. Hardly an australian Nimby reaction. There are significant problems up to twenty miles downwind from local coal fired power stations, both physical(metals etc) and medical,even though very few people live in the vicinity. The australian public has suffered from an overdose of Simpsons education!
