31st December 2007. Tata steel was working overtime-running around securing its raw material supplies through acquisitions and joint ventures in Africa.
First to emerge was a joint venture the sixth largest steel maker signed with state owned Cote deivorian company SODEMI,Tata's first iron ore deal outside India.
Tata has put forward US$1.5-Billion,The ore is expected to benefit Tata steel's facilities in the United Kingdom and the Nederlands.
Tata steel also has an investment of US$1.5 AND us$2.00 billion in Liberia where it is bidding to develope the Western Cluster iron ore deposit,Tata steel is one of seven short listed bidders,other bidders are,Delta Mining,Sinosteel Corporation,Xingxing Group,Rio Doce South Africa,ArcelorMittal and Bahlodi Africa.Tata steel has also signed a joint venture agreement with Australia's Riversdale Mining in Mozambique to develope a hard coking coal and thermal coal project.
January 9th 2008 ArcelorMittal plans Iron Ore hub in West Africa.
Judging from the scenerio on the ground ArcelorMittal, The world's largest steelmaker,now controls most of West Africa's iron ore production.
If predictions are true,the company is on the verge of creating its own mining hub in the region.
ArcelorMittal are the largest steelmaker in the world,they make about 10% of world supply,they are based in Switzerland
Their sales for 2006 were US$86.2Billion.
