Gold or currencies exist purely as a form of exchange for goods. Gold is good because it`s portable and precious unlike fiat currency.
Very difficult to be mobile with sandalwood nuts, sheep or even lead batteries to exchange for goods even if you can find someone who wants them. Still, good luck to you.

The yellow shiny stuff will come back into fashion, why, because there is nothing else that can fulfill the criteria that I have outlined and also at the same time, retain it`s value. I presume sheep and sandalwood nuts go off after a while!? Not sure about glyphosate, superphosphate, urea, trifluralin.
