If you want to mine in an environmentally sensitive area like the Northern Flinders Ranges you must use worlds best practice environmental management, minimise all risks, and do things properly. Given that there is 30-40000 t of uranium oxide in the form of low grade ore there is no way that the proposed mine would be a 'small uranium mine'.

By not disposing of their waste properly (and leaving considerable scarring on the landscape from their exploration activities), Marathon Resources have thrown any trust that they previously had that they will do this out of the window.

That is why it is a big deal and that is why it is unlikely that the mine will go ahead.
