Ho Humm, you are measuring the leadership of the liberal party using one dimension. The polls was only one of the reasons gave for challenging Abbott for the leadership and you are focusing on that and not the other reasons.
If you have a look at the speech he mentions the 30 news polls once but mentions, economic leadership, economic confidence, different style of leadership, leadership that respects, sets out course of action, restoring traditional cabinet government to name a few of the issues mentioned.
Now look at some of the current KPI's
- Business confidence is up Tick
- Balance of trade is in surplus Tick
- Employment growth is up Tick
- Unemployment is down Tick
- Gov Revenue are up Tick
- Gov expenditure is down Tick
- On schedule to budget surplus Tick
None of the above was happening under Abbott but it's happening now under Turnbull
