I have been birding in NZ on a numbers of occasions so know where to find some of them. The sad fact is that with a few exceptions most endemic bird species are very rare.
Just about all the mammal droppings you see in NZ forests are those of introduced animals most of which kill native birds. Most NZ birds have not evolved defence strategies against mammals because there are no land based native mammals in NZ other than two bat species. Many of the at risk endemic birds have only avoided extinction because they live on predator free off-shore islands and in predator free enclosures. These small bits of real estate are only predator free thanks to the dedication of a few.
