My first place was when I was about 25 , It was an ex ministry flat ( they used to own the whole block ) then they sold them all on seperate titles .
It was in Cheltenham Victoria , right next to the Royle Oak Hotel in Nepean Hwy . lol lol .. I wont say it was an ideal enviroment , but to be honest It wasnt that bad either . Some of the tennants there however were well " a bit rough " .But it was a start , I lived there for 3 years we painted it , got a mate who is a plasterer to fill all the cracks in the walls and I sold it for $67,500 ( about a 20k profit ).It was difficult , I came from Beaumaris and It was a bit step down , but It was better than renting .
The Royale Oak public bar , was NOT a place where you would " just pop in for a pot " , there were always giant brawls . I still chuckle to myself when I drive past .
I dont remember the times being quite as " easy " as what has been decribed here .
