A bit like one of those bungs in a thermos bottle which has a rubber section which expands when it's rotated.
The idea it to contain about 5000 psi pressure until the Xmas tree valves are installed. It can be set anywhere.
The casing was run all the way from the top, about 8.6" diameter, down to the top of the liner.
Typically the top can be screwed into, but there are specially developed latching and setting tools for setting and removing such things.
