dombat, yes I am aware that inflation figures have been kept down through cheap imports of shoddy consumer items and that is another reason the governments have been happy even if they have had to adjust the way inflation is measured to ensure the result.
What I would call true inflation is much higher than the government figures, because I look at the big essential costs like food, fuel and housing which have risen far in excess of the official inflation figures which are lowered by taking into account the falling costs of computers and big screen televisions.

What economics book states that it is sound policy to keep running large and growing trade deficits ?
