I could be wrong, but I thought that it was better to use the pre tax figure so that you can compare companies and sectors over time.
Due to deductions and different jurisdictions each company is likely to have a different marginal tax rate, and therefore the after tax figure is only useful if you want to look at what is available to pay dividends.
