There's quiet on deck. Cards, backgammon boards and reading books are packed away. There is a rhythmic tink of the halyard on the mast that started a few days ago, the temperature has dropped and now the sea has a light rash on the surface. People are walking past each other on deck focused on the rigging hardly talking - there is now a tension, an anticipation for what lies ahead. Even Captain Ross is quiet staring down south while fidgeting with the wheel like he is trying to find purchase on the chrome for his grip for things to come. "Ive checked the charts men, get ready.... not long now .... check the rigging, stow the ropes, scrutinize the tethers... wait..."
Did the captain make the right call? Was the longer route going to set us up to catch more wind? The crew whisper quietly in the corners with fugitive glances ... not dissent but doubt... we wait... and all stare south
