Sounds like the announcement is the important factor here... not the selling that occurred prior to it. The selling was probably unlucky timing for some investors who decided to exit. Why would anyone deliberately sell immediately before an announcement with such a huge loss? As you said, the stock is unpredictable, thus I wouldn't read too much into the SP fluctuations indicating an announcement. Announcements come when they come and in the meantime the SP will bounce around.
