"Procter & Gamble, the American consumer products giant with $66 billion in sales, remains number one in the category, but it slipped to 55^th place in Forbes’ overall Global 2000 rankings from 46^th last year. The scope of its business is enormous, with 22 brands that have $1 billion or more in sales, including Pampers, Crest, Tide and Gillette. But with shares down 18% over the latest 12 months, sales growth anemic and profits squeezed, it’s been searching for a new strategy for growth. Without a breakthrough innovation of its own a long time and with Wall Street anxious for a turnaround, P&G chief executive David Taylor in April announced a deal to buy the consumer healthcare business of Merck for $4.2 billion."
