mogga - sadly I have cancer in my family - and I have been aware now for a long time that it is not a bad diet alone which causes cancer.
For a start: after the Chernobyl disaster and the cloud going westwards over much of central and northern Europe, including England, there was an increased number of childhood cancers - and other cancers as well, but the childhood ones were the ones that got the publicity.
My 'middle' daughter has been a healthy eater since childhood, but most likely got the cancer through many sleepless nights experienced after the late birth of her only child - three years of late nights - the parents' fault, of course, as it is a 'no-no' these days to allow a child even to whimper, when going to sleep. Stress and living in a polluted city and going into the city sometimes twice a day (London - she is a performing musician with all the stresses of recording in expensive studios [Abbey road] which don't allow the musicians decent breaks - too costly).
Her first port-of-call when she was first diagnosed (in 2011), was increased reliance on her alternative health guru - which made it all worse - she should have immediately opted for chemotherapy (we had a breakup over the phone for that one) - now the cancer has returned for the third time and the fighting equipment has become heavier and heavier - it's now chemotherapy in England and Newcastle virus injections every 2 months in Germany, with resulting fevers, which kill the tumours - and atm it looks like she is winning - there is still chemotherapy happening in England but with prolonged rest periods now.
At the moment things are looking good, she is continuing her uber-healthy eating habits which she has had all her life and I have hopes that she will outlive me - hopefully both of us will still have a few good years ahead of us.
I am reading and part-translating an interesting book (atm I have another project, which I will finish in 2 weeks - I am hoping - then back to the testing and translating this amazing book - it's in German, there is no English version available) on strengthening the immune system via a specific diet and this book is based on the experiences of an American doctor (Dr. Theron Randolph) with returning soldiers from one of America's most poisonous wars - Vietnam - they returned with broken and poisoned bodies and he treated them with a specific diet, which is too complicated to outline here.
I tried it for a month, found it amazing, it really has a purifying effect on the body - but although the foods are simple but in order to get together the variety necessary for the diet is initially cumbersome and quite expensive; for example he (or rather 'she' - a German dietician who went to study under this man in the U.S.A.) - well: she groups foods according to plant families - no more than two plant families per day - and that includes all the derivatives, like oil and sugar (sparing) - but above all there is a basic 4-day rotation of those different foods involved and then you can go back to the beginning, but you should make sure there is variety involved. So in essence the body is dealing with a limited (and related) number of chemicals per day. As it takes 4 days to completely utilise the food taken in by the body, the diet has a 4-day rhythm and then goes back to the varieties of Day 1 - which incidentally is a 'normal' day, which allows stuff like a glass of wine/beer, coffee, normal bread etc.
She got interested by visiting a Texas Allergy Center, who in turn got their ideas from the Dr Randolph. I only did it for a fortnight and had an amazing 'cleansing' experience - I am planning to prtactice it again - as soon as this project is finished and I can shop for the specifics - there is even a different cooking oil required for each of the four days, and then varieties thereof, so not cheap - initially and probably not ever, as the foods need to be absolutely fresh, especially the oils. External treatments like steam baths (saune) are important also.
A remark on oils: I found a lot of oils on ordinary supermarket shelves, especially when 'special' have been stored there for some time and are usually at the beginning of rancidity when you buy them - so I now make a regular trek to an Italian store here in Perth, where I know, that at least the Olive Oil has a huge turnover - I get a large container, store it in the spare fridge. Similar with packaged nuts - make sure they are not rancid, because they can damage you; walnuts would be best bought when in season in their shells; the alternative is to just use them when in season, which is not so easy in civilised societies as all kinds of food, seasonal or non-seasonal, is available all the year round by virtue of globalisation.
