I agree with you in principle however I wouldn't take the draconian measure of banning anyone over a certain age from driving. I would simply have them tested annually BY A DIFFERENT DOCTOR EACH YEAR. You are also wrong in stating that driving is not a right, it IS a right and is even stated in the constitution. What you should be concerned about is not quashing other people's rights but making sure that people are able to meet their responsibilities. If a person cannot safely drive a car on the road then the safety of other road users takes precedence over the right of that person to drive.

Now I realise that there are testing procedures in place already for older drivers but what I have found is their regular doctor merely rubber-stamps their license regardless of their ability to drive. One case was my own mother who we were trying to get off the road before she killed someone. 'Fortunately' she lost control of her car and hit a power pole before that happened. And then a couple of months back a mate of mine was driving home only to suffer a head-on with an 87-year-old driver who was on the wrong side of the road, passed out over the steering wheel. Apparently he wasn't allowed to drive passed a certain distance from home but again, apparantly his doctor just rubber-stamped the license. My mate's injuries were pretty bad and weren't helped by the fact that none of the safety measures in his 2-year-old Kia SUV didn't work. The seat belts didn't lock, the airbags didn't deploy and steering column didn't collapse. Apparently that's a big problem and there are around 500 cases going on the U.S. over it. But I digress.

On the other hand my 80-year old dad and his same age mates did a trip around Australia in their 4WD's 2 years back and had a great time. He is still fit and active and goes to the gym 3 times a week and is perfectly able to drive.

So not ALL old people should be banned from driving, it should be decided on a case by case basis by a trustworthy doctor.
