Water in LD is recharged annually and from basin wide ground water (bringing with it more K in solution I might add). Infact from my analysis they have "Goldilocks Water" which is not too much (would affect SOP production), not too little (would affect SOP production) but just right for 100 year SOP production.
Process for SOP production is to evapourate brine in large ponds built directly on salt lake (very cheap and self-sealing surface) until NaCl has dropped out then the K2SO4 drops out in thick layer. Drain off last brine, grade into windrows, truck to finishing plant and presto. See the Great Lakes SOP operations in US for methodolgy except no need for gas drying and temperature for evaopouration about 20 deg warmer.
Latest SOP is about $A850 I believe.
