Well when you buy shares you never actually see them. The broker holds them for you. So when you buy the shares you get a piece of paper that tells you how many you own and how much they are worth. I was under the impression shorting works the same way. You simply press a sell button and get a piece of paper telling you how many shares are shorted and what they are worth.
You as a holder of shares are never aware that your shares are being used for shorting, nor should you really care. I'm happy to be corrected if this is wrong. I have a background in finance and economics, but the intricate details of shorting elude me.
